Member's Report – Mid Week Lunch Run
By Rick Wade (from the May 2011 Triumph Torque)
A hard core of eight retirees enjoyed a pleasant run to Bowning and lunch at the Rollonin Cafe on Wednesday 27 April. A good selection of classic Triumphs turned heads as we cruised along the Barton and Hume Highways to the historic village of Bowning. The Lloyds travelled in comfort in their 2.5PI while the sports car brigade saw the Ockwells in a TR4, the Corbetts in a GT6, Graeme Howieson in a Stag and Rick Wade in a TR5.
The Cafe is housed in a slab hut with the walls lined with old newspapers dating back to at least the 1940's – including advertisements for the latest Standard Vanguards - plenty to entertain guests as they wait for their lunch. The business is run by locals and offers a good selection of basic but good value lunchtime fare. It's certainly a venue to keep in mind for future regular Club runs. The number of Cafes in small towns close to Canberra seems to be on the slide.
These mid week runs are certainly enjoyed by those who participate. No time pressures and an opportunity to relax and chat over a light meal. I encourage those who have a few free hours on the last Wednesday of the Month to give it a try.
Member's Report – Break the Ice Breakfast
A beautiful morning greeted the few hardy souls who met at Cooleman Court. Surprisingly, this was the second Club event in a row where all attendees were in Triumphs! (although Katie Mouser et al arrived at Murrays Corner in a modern!).
Steve Osborne proved the worth of the Stag, with wife and young daughter safely accommodated in classic motoring style.
A pleasant trip saw us in convoy, dominated by Stags, proceed through the Cotter, pausing briefly (at the lights) to view the work on the expanded dam. Fortunately, it wasn't raining as our "fall back" option of the shelter shed at the Cotter picnic area was closed (also due to the dam works).
A quick run up the hill and through the nice twisty bits saw us arrive and set up at Murrays corner without incident at around 9.30am. Jack Gault arrived soon after - from the opposite direction!
Daryl entertained two of his colleagues from the USA who were suitably impressed with the Clubs BBQ set up. I don't think our president was confident enough in his TR7 to risk bringing them in that so they joined us courtesy of Katie and Scott in the modern and I'm not sure if they were relieved or disappointed in that!
A great morning was enjoyed by all although the temperature proved a little too much for any ice to be found – maybe there is something in all this talk of global warming?
Member's Report – National Motoring Heritage Day Run to Cootamundra
By Daryl Mouser
A brief recall of the recent run to Cootamundra as part of the National Motoring Heritage weekend activities. Not too many words, the pictures tell it all (mostly).
A typically cold and frosty Canberra morning greeted those who gathered at Cooleman Crt early on Saturday morning for a 0900 departure. From my perspective this was also the first extended distance trip in the 7, and the weather was determined that it would be one to remember (no heater – gloves, beanie blankets etc for the humans, and a balky gearbox until warmed through).
Away on time we collected the Tinks at the Dinosaur Car Park, with Steve and Lucy, plus Anthony and Susan heading out separately later in the day.
A very pleasant trip down the Hume via Jugiong to Coolac, then a pleasant country road across to Cootamundra. (All cars arrive without event including the later arrivals). After lunch and a short rest, the girls opted for a cuppa in the sun while the boys headed over to Peter Kelly's shed to look at his toys, a lovely Mk1 sedan, Stag, and several vintage bikes. Peter also dabbles in a little painting.
Dinner at the club on Saturday evening allowed for all to meet up, new friends, plenty of chatter, a couple of good Reds or the odd beer. Promises of an early start and a busy day for Sunday.
Sunday arrives and so do the cars. From the Motel we departed for a run out to Stock N Bingle Seed store. A nice run in the country, albeit fuel caused a little concern for Dave in the 4 (all good, the route home much shorter). Morning tea (yum), country style, and a great insight into the range of stationary machines and other vehicles that make up Laddies collection amazed all. Excellent and a chance for the girls to break off for a chat about crafts, knitting, teddy bears and more.
A short run back towards Coota brought us to Paul Ballard's to look over his collection of Triumphs and other vehicles including a vintage Citroen open tourer.
Departing Paul's, we headed back into town and met up with a large group of enthusiasts, their cars and partners at the Coota "Shed". What a great facility, tools and machinery, hoist, pit, etc etc etc and a top BBQ lunch.
Before too long it was time to regroup, finish the farewells and head back on the road to Canberra.
Overall a great weekend. My personal thanks to all in the Coota club(s) for their hospitality and assistance.
Overall an excellent weekend with lots of Triumphs, machines and food, new and existing friends, and brilliant (albeit cold and crisp) weather. The enthusiasm and commitment of this group of enthusiasts in Cootamundra is a credit and great reminder to us all of the true value in our clubs, the friendship from a common interest and the achievements that are possible with a little help from like minded friends.
Enjoy, Daryl M
Member's Report – Crisp Gallery Tour April 2010
By Jack Gault
Meet at Cooleman Court at 8.45 for a 9.00 start, and everyone did! Well we didn’t start till 9.15 but that’s still a record for one of my runs.
The Cooleman Court start saw five Triumphs and three moderns head off. Enroute to the Gallery we met with two TR sidescreens and Anthony Ockwell in his Spitfire, who joined the convoy at Murrumbateman.
The Gallery had offered the choice of scones and a cuppa or a selection of cakes and slices etc. for morning tea, and luckily we had opted for the cakes and slices, which turned out to be a great choice. Some heroic efforts were put in but we were unable to quite eat everything. After a relaxing chat under the shade trees we were given a short lecture on the artwork, both glass and chainsaw sculpture, followed by a look through the small showroom and then a wander through the large (5 Acres) gardens and water features, with the chainsaw sculptures scattered throughout.
The serious part of the day was next, a visit to the,--- CRAFT SHOPPE---. Once again the Triumph Car Club Guild of Navigators excelled themselves and enriched the local community with their visit. Many and varied were their purchases, but I must note that Mrs Gault was the only one who needed help packing and loading the items.
Once again everyone returned to their vehicles spot on time and while a few headed off for other appointments, the rest of us set off for the BBQ at Anthony Ockwell's house, or should I say Triumph Warehouse. Anthony’s family has 5 Triumphs with 4 in good condition. Of course the centre of attraction was the TR4 that was in very original condition including fully ventilated floors and sills.
After a most enjoyable BBQ we gave our thanks to our hosts, Susie and Anthony and headed home on our separate ways.
Great company and weather made a great day out, give me some ideas for similar runs for next year.
Cheers, Jack.
Member's Report – The 2009 Observation Run Ver.2.0 Or The Weston Park Curse Strikes Again!
By Jack Gault
Sunday 22-11-09 saw the start of the summer triathlon season which closed part of the route selected earlier this year. Mid November saw the start of the Casuarina sands picnic area re construction, which closed another section of the original course. The hot weather also brought the Canoe club meeting to Weston Park instead of across the lake where there was no shade, so parking was restricted! However;
On the day the Triumphant competitors assembled for the fray, and after an exhaustive driver and crew briefing, they set off bravely into the unknown. The course was about 80klm in length with a few stops to answer questions, but was mainly, it was a drive in the country, finishing back at Weston Park.
At the conclusion of the event, the final results and prize winners were obvious to all, well certainly after I marked the forms.
Dave Rogers won the Lateral Thinking or most entertaining answer award, when he noted down the illegal driving style of another competitor as an answer to the question of what could be seen at a particular location.
The Mousers had the most correct answers, and are obviously getting used to reading between the lines for a few hints, or have developed a twisted sense of logic similar to my own.
The Lloyds won the best use of a Triumph award, which was also sub titled Longest Distance travelled in the event, but again I am sure this was down to my twisted sense of logic.
Overall the event went well, and as I noted above the award winners were easily decided, as unfortunately, only 3 cars attended!
Thanks to Frank and Pixie Marshall for their help with the event and for hosting the awards and closing ceremony barbeque, and to the Tinks and Mrs Gault for supporting the barbeque ceremony.
Next time it won't be at Weston Park!
Cheers, Jack.
