Progress? by Todd Wilson 30 Nov 2003

Some photos of my ongoing Spitfire 6 restoration and modification project. As I strip it down I've found some "interesting" modifications/problems/etc. I've included some pictures of the joys I've found.

The broken off windscreen frame pillar

The special low capacity petrol tank

The very special quick change access for the tailshaft

The soft aluminium strap that was holding the handbrake mount to the body

The higher centre of gravity engine mounts

The bonnet with initial repairs to the puncture caused by a PO dropping the bonnet on a partially installed engine

The (now a little rusty) dash panel that my father fabricated for me to replace the limited edition invisible one that was there when I bought the car

As you can see, a very special Spitfire. 8-) Not really as bad as all that, the car is pretty sound besides these problems. I've since pulled the body off the chassis (more photos to come), and the chassis is in almost perfect condition - just some damage to the outriggers that bolt to the firewall (looks like it has been jacked up on these points).

The next bit of work I'll be doing on the car is the fitment of the rotoflex rear end. I'll take plenty of photos of this as I do it and it should be up some time in the next ten years as an article.
